Black White Continuous Ink System Printer
Although color printers are relatively affordable, many people only print in black, especially in the commercial environment. Many offices only need to print invoices and receipts, so why pay more for a color printer? Monochrome printers often have room for a bigger cartridge, giving you a higher page yield, so you don't have to replace the cartridge as frequently.
Laser printers are usually the preferred choice for black and white printing, as they typically print faster. That said, inkjet printers are more versatile and often cheaper, and those with an ink tank system can often match or surpass the page yield of their laser counterpart. Whether you're looking for the best black and white laser printer for home use or office use, you'll find a good option that fits your printing needs.
We've tested over 120 printers, and below are our recommendations for the best monochrome printers you can buy. You can also check out our picks for the best laser printers, the best printers for small businesses, and the best all-in-one printers.

Best Black And White Printer
Type All in One
Technology Laser
Color No
SuperTank No
Wireless Yes
The best black and white printer we've tested is the Canon imageCLASS MF445dw. This all-in-one laser model is bulky but feels exceptionally well built. It includes an ADF-equipped scanner that can process up to 41 pages per minute and scan double-sided sheets in a single pass, saving you precious time. A regular toner cartridge yields around 4000 prints, and there are XL cartridges available that'll last longer. The cartridge is a little expensive, but that's because it includes the drum unit, so you won't ever have to worry about replacing the drum separately. It prints quickly at 21 pages per minute and doesn't take long to warm up and get a single page out. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, USB, and Ethernet, and it supports Apple AirPrint and Mopria Print Service.
Unfortunately, this model is hard to find at most major retailers at the time of writing. Some third-party sellers have it in stock, but it may be priced much higher than the $350 USD MSRP. Alternatively, you can get the Canon imageCLASS MF455dw, which has more availability. We haven't tested this newer model, though we expect it to perform similarly.

Best Mid-Range Black And White Printer
Type All in One
Technology Laser
Color No
SuperTank No
Wireless Yes
If you want to save some money with a more modest mid-range model, go with the Brother MFC-L2710DW. It's an all-in-one laser model that yields nearly 2000 pages per cartridge and prints up to 32 pages per minute. Replacement toner isn't expensive, and the printer accepts third-party toner, but keep in mind that you'll have to replace the drum separately, which adds to your overall maintenance cost. It has a flatbed scanner and an ADF, meaning you can scan both individual sheets and a stack of sheets without hassle. It doesn't support duplex scanning, so you'll have to flip the sheets manually when scanning double-sided documents.
For those who do need to scan double-sided sheets often, the Brother MFC-L2750DW might be a better choice. The two printers are very similar in appearance and performance, but the L2750DW's ADF can scan double-sided sheets in a single pass. Of course, the price of the printer is a bit higher, but the difference might be well worth it to you if the extra feature is something you need.

Best Budget Black And White Printer
Type Printer Only
Technology Laser
Color No
SuperTank No
Wireless Yes
Our pick for the best budget black and white printer is the Brother HL-L2370DW. This standalone model is budget-friendly without compromising some features that may be crucial for your home office, like duplex printing, a high page yield, or a fast printing speed. It's very compact, which is great if you don't have much space on your desk for a huge printer. It can print around 1200 pages with a full cartridge, so it'll last many months if you don't print often. You can get higher-yield cartridges that'll last longer, and it accepts third-party toner, which might be cheaper. The downside is that the drum unit is separate from the cartridge, so it's an extra purchase you'll have to make eventually. It prints up to 35 pages per minute and can perform double-sided printing automatically.
If this pick isn't in stock, you can get the Brother HL-L2350DW instead. It's nearly identical, but it prints slightly slower and doesn't have an Ethernet port. If neither of those shortcomings bothers you, it's worth a look.

Best High-Yield Black And White Printer
Type All in One
Technology Laser
Color No
SuperTank Yes
Wireless Yes
If you only care about a high page yield, we recommend the HP Neverstop Laser MFP 1202w. This all-in-one isn't like most laser printers; instead of using cartridges, it has a refillable toner tank, similar to inkjet supertank models. A full tank yields about 9500 pages, meaning you won't have to replenish the tank often, and replacement toner is cheap, making the cost per print exceptionally low. There's a scanner if you need it, but it isn't ideal for scanning long or double-sided sheets as there's no automatic feeder.
You still get the usual Wi-Fi and USB- connectivity, and the printer is compatible with HP's mobile companion app, which you can use to print, copy, scan, and perform maintenance tasks. Its printing speed is a little slow at 12 pages per minute, though it can print faster over a wired USB connection.

Best Black And White Inkjet Printer
Type Printer Only
Technology Inkjet
Color No
SuperTank Yes
Wireless Yes
If you prefer an inkjet printer, we recommend the Epson WorkForce ST-M1000. It's a standalone model that comes with not two but three black ink bottles, so you'll be good for over 10,000 prints. The biggest advantage of this model over the others is its much cheaper ink cost, which helps keep its cost-per-print exceptionally low. It prints up to 18 pages per minute and only takes a few seconds to warm up.
Unlike laser printers, you won't have to worry about replacing the drum unit; however, this model's inkjet technology means you need to print frequently, as letting the printer go unused for too long will clog up the printheads.
